Is This Story Believable?

13 06 2009

A report in Englands Daily Star newspaper claims that the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for 80 million pounds was agreed by the two clubs ONE YEAR AGO! What’s more, The Star reported the details of the deal as long ago as the 21st of June 2008.

If  these allegations are correct, the Manchester United fans must be owed an apology from all three parties for a year long charade which was full of  “I’m going”, “He’s Staying”, “There’s no agreement in place” and numerous other “quotes”.

To be fair the question must be asked as to how believable these claims really are.  Sir Alex has been regarded as a highly shrewd operator for years and possibly felt that the agreement would be in the best interests of the club. If that’s the case he cannot be blamed for going along with such a deal.

What do you think? Read the reports then take the poll.

My personal opinion is that the allegations put forward by The Daily Star are very close to being spot on!

ronaldomadridCRISTIANO RONALDO was told he could leave Manchester United this summer – a year ago.

Just as Starsport told you last year, a secret deal was hatched between the World Footballer of the Year and Sir Alex Ferguson.

With Real Madrid trying to lure the Portuguese hitman last summer, Fergie flew out to see Ronaldo in the Algarve.

It was at that point that Ronaldo agreed to stay for another 12 months in a bid to help United become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy.

They fell one game short of that this season, due to their painful defeat against Barcelona in Rome.

The pact between manager and player is the reason Fergie has allowed one of his favourite sons to move on to a club he has not always had the best relationship with.

Madrid have made it worthwhile for Fergie to cash in with a world-record offer, so the Scotsman was happy to stand by his word of a year ago.

He was not going to let the player down, which is why Ronaldo has kept the peace in recent weeks with no talk of moving to Madrid.

But once the Champions League Final was over, that was it. Ronaldo and Fergie knew exactly what would happen next.

Ronaldo will not leave Los Angeles, where he is on holiday, until he has a deal signed with Madrid.

He wants at least five years and £10m a season – after tax – in wages, which would be an astronomical £60m on top of the £80m transfer fee.

The deal has to be done before the end of this month, though.

That is because there is understood to be a penalty clause agreed between Ronaldo and Madrid, which would see one or the other paying a £27m fee if no deal was done.

But that looks like it will not come into play, as a move should be wrapped up in a matter of days – completing the biggest transfer the world has ever seen.

This is how the Daily Star reported these claims ONE YEAR AGO
