How fair is relegation?

14 05 2009

One point,  just one measly point and the 18th title is won! Had Liverpool not somehow equalised at the death against Arsenal, the race would have been over and done with already!

As much as I’m desperate to have that one point won at Old Trafford on Saturday, there is an uneasy feeling that a great wrong may be on the cards.

If the final game at Hull City becomes meaningless and Sir Alex does what he has every right to do by fielding a weakened side in preparation for Rome, how would the other relegation threatened clubs feel?

It’s not a new scenario because others have done it prior to important matches but this is the end game which could cost some clubs millions simply because they were not fortunate enough to be in Hull’s position in the last game of the season.

Clubs used to be penalised in the past for not fielding their strongest teams but now it’s a squad game so how can anyone make such a subjective decision?

Nobody can begrudge Fergusons team selection when a huge game is due within 72 hours and nobody can blame Hull City for the fortunate situation that they find themselves in, my only question is whether it will be fair on the other clubs who are desperate to avoid a possible financially disastrous exit from the Premier League.
